Today, Ash Wednesday, marks the start of the season of Lent. Our faith tells us that Lent is a time for transformation, inviting us to look at our own lives and intentions and make changes that bring us closer to God. How we act on our faith can lead to a profound transformation for in the lives of other people. This Lent, CAFOD invites you to help to make a difference in the lives of some of the world’s poorest communities by giving, praying, and taking action during Lent.
Be Hungry for Change!
This Lent Fast Day (Friday, 22nd February), we’re invited to share the abundance of God’s creation with our brothers and sisters across the world so that we can end the scandal of hunger and make a fairer world where everyone has enough to eat. From this weekend, volunteers will be speaking at Mass and telling the story of a Kenyan family whom CAFOD helped survive a drought by providing a “Super” Goat. Your support each Fast Day helps many of the world’s poorest communities to work their way out of poverty.
Good luck to all of our volunteers who are speaking at Mass and distributing envelopes this weekend! If you’re looking for last minute posters, talks, or other Fast Day resources, visit http://www.cafod.org.uk/CAFOD-in-your-area/Lent-2013, or contact us here on 0208 449 6970.
Perhaps you’ve organised a soup lunch or other event in your parish to mark the day? If so, we’d love to feature it here on the CAFOD Westminster blog. You can send your pictures and stories to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Take Action this Lent by Campaigning with CAFOD
There can be Enough Food For Everyone if we’re Hungry for Change, and it only takes a minute to use your voice to speak up for a world where no one goes hungry. CAFOD’s Hungry for Change campaign continues throughout Lent, so why not set aside some time this Lent to learn more about the issues around global hunger and the unfair food system, and take action with your parish community by organising a card signing one week in your parish. To order campaign materials, contact CAFOD Westminster at 0208 449 6970 or email@example.com.
Give it up this Lent!
Your fasting could make a big difference to people who are working hard to overcome poverty and injustice. Could you give up something you like – a chocolate bar, a Friday night takeaway, or a pint of beer, and give the money you save to CAFOD during the collection in your parish? Perhaps you have resolved to give up something for the whole of Lent – could you pop the cash you save in a collecting box throughout Lent and pass it on to CAFOD at Easter? Collecting boxes are available to order from the CAFOD Westminster office.
Please keep the one in eight people who go hungry each night in your thoughts and prayers throughout Lent. CAFOD has prepared an interactive Lenten Prayer Calendar available at www.cafod.org.uk/Pray/Lent-2013-Calendar to help guide you through the season. You can also download prayers and liturgies, and even sign up to receive a weekly reflection by email online at www.cafod.org.uk/Pray.
If you’re praying with your parish or school, you can also make use of CAFOD’s Stations of the Cross. You can download an electronic version online for both Primary and Secondary schools, and a poster pack for use in parishes is available to order from the CAFOD Westminster office: 0208 449 6970 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Thank you all again for all that you do to support CAFOD. Your prayers, actions, and support truely does make a difference.
