Is your parish a Fairtrade parish? If not, sign up now!
Fairtrade Fortnight (24th Feb – 9th Mar 2014) is fast approaching and it is the aim of CAFOD and Westminster Justice & Peace to achieve Fairtrade status for the Diocese of Westminster by then. London recently celebrated its 5th anniversary as the world’s largest Fairtrade city and, since the Diocese of Westminster covers most of London, it would be wonderful if we could be a part of this. To register our diocese, we need at least half of the parishes registered as Fairtrade. With 214 parishes in the diocese, this is no mean feat! Luckily, we are very close to our target as there are 87 parishes signed up and we only need 20 more. One of those parishes could be yours.
Why should my parish register?
Buying Fairtrade products is all about supporting and showing solidarity with the poor. By supporting and promoting Fairtrade within your parish, you are doing just that. Products with the Fairtrade mark mean that producers and farmers are paid a fair price for their goods, as well as a little bit extra that they can put back into their communities. When the Diocese of Westminster is recognised as Fairtrade, it will raise awareness of Fairtrade even further and inspire more people to think about where their food comes from.
What should my parish do?
There are three simple requirements that your parish needs to do in order to become Fairtrade:
1. Use Fairtrade tea and coffee after services and for all meetings for which the parish has responsibility.
2. Move forward on using other Fairtrade products (such as sugar, biscuits and fruit).
3. Promote Fairtrade during Fairtrade Fortnight and during the year through events, worship and other activities whenever possible.
Once your parish meets these criteria, you can fill out the application form which can be downloaded here and post it to CAFOD. We will then send you a lovely certificate to display in your church.
After we have registered 20 more parishes, we will be awarded Fairtrade status by the Fairtrade Foundation. To celebrate this award, there will be an event on 1st March 2014 at Holy Apostles Church, Pimlico from 2-5pm. There will be Fairtrade films, a food and wine tasting, and special guest speakers including Bishop John Arnold. Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing you there!
