Haiti: Three years on

Three and a half years ago a catastrophic earthquake struck the Caribbean nation of Haiti, killing thousands and leaving millions more without access to the most basic of necessities. Since then, CAFOD supporters in England and Wales have raised £5.3 million to help those worst effected by the disaster. As thanks for your incredible work and contributions, a downloadable exhibition is now available, showing exactly how your support of CAFOD continues to make a huge difference as the people of Haiti work to rebuild their lives.

90 year old Casimir lost his house in the earthquake. With CAFOD's help, he has now been able to build a new home. He said: "I am so happy with my new house. I keep thanking God. It is like a miracle. God bless you all for coming out so far to see me. I am sure that God is travelling with you."

Working with the support of the Haitian church and other partners, CAFOD has been able to rapidly develop a strong relationship with the community, enabling them to respond to problems as quickly and effectively as possible. Your contributions have helped support a wide variety of immediate and long-term projects such as:

  • providing tents and shelters for thousands of people immediately after the quake
  • constructing permanent, disaster-resistant homes
  • establishing safe water supplies and latrines to prevent the spread of disease – in camps and as people moved back into more permanent shelters
  • implementing units in hospitals to deal with the spread of cholera
  • providing emergency support when storms and hurricanes strike
Children display the puppets they have made to help them learn to talk about their experiences at a workshop to help young people who lived through the earthquake deal with the trauma.

The exhibition goes into even greater detail about how your work has helped CAFOD respond to the disaster, as well as featuring personal stories and pictures of some of the people your contributions have helped. You can download the exhibition by clicking here. Please be aware that this is quite a large PDF file (around 87mb) and so may take some time to download.

You can help pass on our thanks and spread the word of the great effect supporting CAFOD can have in helping those that need it most by printing the exhibition out and displaying it in your parish or school. Alternatively, if you do not have access to a printer, get in touch with us on 0208 449 6970 or westminster@cafod.org.uk and we would be happy to send you the display.

If you want to learn more about how your support is helping in areas other than Haiti, come along to a special talk from CAFOD’s Clare Dixon on our work in Nicaragua and Guatemala. The talk will take place between 10 and 12.30pm on Saturday 14 September at the Benedictine Centre for Spirituality, Catholic Church of Christ the King, 29 Bramley Road, London, N14 4HE. To find out more and to book places, get in touch with us on 0208 449 6970 or westminster@cafod.org.uk.
