Grab your helmet and get yourself into gear, this year’s Pedal Against Poverty sponsored bike ride is just around the corner!
CAFOD supporters from London, Hertfordshire and further afield will gather in the morning of Sunday, 23 June, for a refreshing summer cycle through the beautiful Lee Valley Country Park. Open to riders of all ages, the event offers both a 10 mile ride starting in Cheshunt and an 18 mile course for more experienced riders beginning in Ponders End. Riders on both routes will meet up at the midway point in Broxbourne for a group picnic.
Joining us on the ride will be Lancashire CAFOD volunteer Fred Uttley, who will be taking part as part of his own Tour de Fred fundraising attempt. In the space of just under three weeks, Fred aims to cycle through every one of the 22 Catholic dioceses in England and Wales, a route which will mean riding more than 1000 miles.
Great-grandfather Fred, 68, said: “I wanted to think of another way to raise money, so I was sat at home and then it came to me; ‘Why don’t I do a bike ride round each of the dioceses in the UK for CAFOD?’ I haven’t ridden a bike in over 50 years, so I think the distance will be the biggest challenge.”
With just over a month to go before the event, time is running out to book your place and join Fred and hundreds of others as they Pedal Against Poverty. The sooner you register, the more time you’ll have to gather as many sponsors as possible and really help to make a difference to people living in poverty and hunger around the world. Anyone and everyone is welcome to take part in the ride so get your friends and family involved for a fun, healthy and worthwhile day out.
