Our thanks go out to all at St Michael and St Martin RC Primary school in Hounslow for their excellent work raising money and donating to CAFOD through the World Gifts catalogue.
The children were inspired to take action following a visit from CAFOD schools volunteer Alana in October last year. Alana spoke to the youngsters about the problems faced by those who do not have access to basic necessities such as water and food, and how supporting CAFOD through World Gifts can help people to beat these problems.
Led by the school’s student council, the pupils and staff have worked hard to organise fund raising events ranging from cake sales and non-uniform days to a huge raffle for donated Easter eggs.
“The school has long been a CAFOD supporter,” said assistant Headteacher, Mrs Mary Kate Allister. “The whole school’s community are incredibly generous, especially in response to emergencies, but we decided we wanted to do something a bit more sustained.”
The school have been donating the money they raise through CAFOD’s World Gifts catalogue. The pupils began by creating their own ‘virtual village’ – a model village which they add to as they donate as a visual representation of the difference they are making to real-life communities. They then decided to focus on five main areas: water, crops, livestock, education and health. Their efforts have already raised enough money to pay for clean water sources, hygienic toilets, various types of livestock and a vet to look after them, medical help and facilities including a community health team, and a day of games, dancing and music for vulnerable children who have lost parents and family members to AIDS.
“All of the children have surpassed themselves,” said Mrs Allister. “Everyone, from nursery all the way up, have become involved in one way or another. The children have responded really well, and we are very proud of them.”
A big thank you once again to Mrs Mary Kate Allister, Headteacher Ms Eileen Byrne and all the pupils, staff and parents at St Michael and St Martin. CAFOD’s World Gifts catalogue is a fantastic way support CAFOD’s work with developing communities around the world. You can give a loved one the gift of making a difference for as little as £10, enough to pay for a vegetable garden, or get your whole school or parish together to raise money towards a health clinic or community water supply.
