Football Fan Scores a Fantastic Contribution for CAFOD

A young football fan from Welwyn has raised more than £1000 from the sale of two footballs signed by members of Manchester United football team, which she has donated to CAFOD to support its work in some of the world’s poorest areas.

A big thank you goes out to Sophie Constable, 21, of Welwyn Garden City, who raised a total of £1060 for CAFOD by selling the footballs and collecting donations from members of her local parish, Holy Family Church, Digswell.

Sophie received the two footballs in March, when she went to Old Trafford to attend a question and answer session for the Manchester United Disabled Supporters Association (MUDSA). While there, she met players Michael Carrick and Javier Hernandez, who signed a football for her. Sophie later won the second ball, signed by the entire team, in the MUDSA raffle.

The life-long Man-U fan then made the selfless decision to auction the footballs to raise money to help fight poverty around the world. She arranged a charity auction through the Hertfordshire branch of the Manchester United Supporters Association, and delivered the balls to the winning bidders personally.

In addition to her love of football, Sophie has always had a passion for all things African. She has visited North Africa herself and hopes to travel to the Sub-Saharan part of the continent soon. It was this that inspired her to take action to help people in developing countries.

Sophie’s contribution could help CAFOD pay for four rainwater harvesting tanks in a developing country, which would provide enough clean drinking water for 20 families.  This is just one of the ways in which donations to CAFOD can help to make a difference to people living in poverty around the world.
